Storyboard Text

  • Setting
  • Character (Motive)
  • I need to find a way to buy Jim a gift!
  • Conflict
  • Oh! Will Jim ever love me again? Now that I've cut my hair and sold it to buy him a chain? One of his two most prized possessions?
  • The setting allows the plot to develop because it gives the reader a idea of the characters economic status. For example, the author explain the "shabby old couch". The story takes place in a New York City apartment.
  • Climax
  • The characters motives moves the readers one step closer to figuring out the theme. The character wanted to buy her husband a gift, this is her motive.
  • Resolution
  • The conflict in the story shows the point of the theme. Della wanted to buy Jim a gift although she only had $1.87. She ended up selling her hair that Jim took pride in. If Della's love for Jim wasn't so grand, she wouldn't have been driven to cut her hair.
  • Theme
  • The climax develops the theme because it showed the sacrifices that both of the the characters made. It shows that both of them loved each other enough to give up their most prized possession.
  • Jim and Della decide to put the gifts aside and wait for Della's hair to grow so she could use the combs and for Jim to buy a new watch so that he could use the chain that Della bought her..
  • The theme of the story is that with love comes sacrifice.
