  • February 2000
  • March 2000
  • June 30, 2000
  • The Hurricane that occurred on the Santa Fe Island was a huge catastrophe. This hurricane, “DASA”, which was a level 3 hurricane, flooded the Island and made the organism living there either die, migrate, or adapt to this huge change. This was a Secondary Succession meaning that the soil was still there so the Island and the organisms didn’t have to start completely from scratch.
  • September 2003
  • Some birds had to migrate to another island temporarily until the flood goes down. The seal and the marine iguana adapted and started to just be in the ocean for shelter. The Iguana did come out eventually to get some oxygen. Some plants died from absorbing to much water for their system. Some red and black mangrove survived.
  • October 2003
  • The water level that the hurricane left was very low. More animals and birds began to come back, plants were still of low source because there was still too much water for them to grow back. The birds which are the Galapagos Finch, Figrate Bird, Swallow tailed Gull, and the Galapagos Hawk adapted to this hurricane from the beginning. The Marine Iguana migrated to another place then back because it can’t survive that long underwater. The Sea Lion adapted to the changes was fine.
  • December 2003
  • Now that the animals have come back, they are trying to get used to the environment change and recreating their shelter.  The seal and the marine iguana started to go on land to sunbathe. The birds recreated their nest and the plants are starting to grow back. The red and balck mangroves slowly start sprouting.
  • Since the flood has gone down, the plants are back. Since the animals are back and re-creating their habitats more plants are beginning to grow. The Red Mangroves are becoming bigger and stronger since they have been alive for a longer time. The Black Mangroves are starting to grow and are small still. The Black Fern just like the Red Mangroves are growing stronger and taller. Most of the animals are back on the island.
  • The island has gone back to normal and the animals have adapted to their environment once again.  The animals started to recreate the food chain once again.  This is the climax community.
