These were the Carthaginians. They were better than the Romans because they had more money, they could hire troops, they had more territory, they had greater economic territory, and they had the best navy.
The Romans, on the other hand, had no navy which was a big problem because they couldn't fight battles in the sea. Therefore, the Romans fought most battles in Sicily and won.
So what do the Romans do? They built a navy! Except the Romans had no experience so they lost their first battle. But did the Romans give up? No!
The Romans built The Crow. The Crow was a giant crane-like structure that could rotate 90 degrees. The Crow would extend onto the enemies ship and marines would run onto the other ship and kill the people on the other ship.
However, The Crow did need a lot of builders and sailors, resources, time, and money but the Romans did it.
Unfortunately, the Romans lost their fleet 2 times. One in a battle and the other in a storm.
Did the Romans give up yet? No! The Romans eventually won the first Punic war! They won because they were very determined and they had innovations like The Crow.
