Storyboard Text

  •     Douglass was broken down and miserable with no room for happiness and that just how the masters wanted him to be. He worked day in and day out while his muscles ached for mercy. His stench unbearable to the human nose and the sweat rolling down his body. Skin torn and bruised from working throughout the fields he would stumble back into his living quarters to get a few hours of sleep before he was called by the overseer at the crack of dawn. “Get up and get to work you good for nothing slaves.”
  • No slave was determined enough to stand up for his or her self, and was often punished very cruely for their actions if they did. “Go clean out the barn.” “Yes, sir..” “Good now go and take care of my market duties for the day.” Douglass and the other slaves were kept under the watchful eye of the masters, as they worked. Even when it appeared the master was gone he would be watching from afar still watching for them to make a mistake. They could never stop their work not even for a second of rest or the punishment inflicted upon them would be brutal.   “Don't stop. He could be watching us and I don't want another whipping today.”
  • Douglass and his fellow slaves were treated like animals and savages with inhuman rights and conditions. They were looked upon as not equals but as a lower class of species less superior to their own. Douglass later would work hard to stop this series of inhumane acts and bring justice to the people that had suffered generation after generation of inhumane conditions. “You say you give us all we need, but you only provide us with just enough to live and not even a decent place to call home!” “We will one day be free of this and no longer face the harshness of slavery.”
