  • "He struggled up to the surface and tried to cry out, but the wash from the speeding yacht slapped him in the face and the salt water in his open mouth made him gag and strangle." Rainsford was trying to survive the waves of the water and not drown.
  • "Twenty feet below him the sea grumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea. . . . " Rainsford had no where else to go onto the island, so he hurridly jumped into the sea, hoping to survive.
