Maddy confronts her mom after finding the medical papers. Paula says she did it to protect them, because after losing Maddy's brother and father, she couldn't handle anymore grief.
Maddy begins to take over her own life and contacts Carla, who says she always thought there was something off while taking care of Maddy. However, she says that Maddy should forgive her mother.

She starts going to a therapist and begins to built her immune system to become a part of the real world for the first time after 18 years of sterile seclusion.
Maddy fishes through old emails after unsuccessfully trying to contact Olly, and finds where he lives in New York. After also finding some of the places he said he loves to go to, she plans a trip to New York.
Maddy alludes to her favorite book in the last email she sends to Olly, hoping he would read it and understand, and leaves for the book store Olly talked about in his emails.
At the book store, Maddy places the book on the bookshelf, and hides on the other side. Olly comes in and finds her, and they happily reunite.
