The enlightenment period started taking place after France was influenced by John Locke that people should have power and the government should protect their natural rights. Louis XIV imposed unfair taxes and caused France debt due to him spending all of the country's money.
Louis XVI is in a panic because France is in a lot of debt when he come in to powerso he tries to raise taxes to pay them off. In order to have everyone pay taxes and not just the third estate, he decides to hold a meeting to see if the first and second estates will agree.
Louis XVI calls for a meeting called the Estates General to settle the disagreement between taxes and ask them for help to pay off the taxes since France is in so much debt. In order to do so, they all need to pay taxes.
The 1st and 2nd estates refuse to pay taxes because they believe they believe higher classes should not have to do the same as the peasants and bourgeoisie. This infuriates the 3rd estate.
On 20 June 1789, the members of the French Third Estate, who had begun to call themselves the National Assembly, took the Tennis Court Oath vowing "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established".
As a result of the 1st and 2nd estates refusing to meet the 3rd estates demands, the 3rd estate stormed the Bastille Prison on July 14th, 1789 and stole weaponry and let out inmates.
