Salva and his group safely got to the refugee camp, but it was nowhere near as great as they thought it was. "Uncle had helped him get through the desert that way,bit by bit, one step at a time. Perhaps . . . Perhaps Salva could get through life at the camp in the same way."(72)
After a while in the camp, soldiers kicked them out and forced them to cross the Gilo, a crocodile infested river. They had to cross this during the rainy season and with soldiers shooting at them. "More Crocodiles were launching themselves off the banks. The rain, the mad current, the bullets, the crocodiles, the welter of arms and legs, the screams, the blood. . . . He had to get across somehow."(79)
He might be wrong. It might be another person named Salva. I won't look too soon....
When they arrive in Kenya at this new refugee camp. Everyday they post a new list of people who are going to America. One day Salva's name got called and he rushed over to see.
"Salva! Come quickly! Your name is on the list today!"
