  • Okay, kids. Before we learn to read, we need to learn the alphabet, and what letters and words are. After practicing some sight words, we can start sounding out new words.
  • Okay, kids. It's free reading time. Choose from these books of stories you may know, and do your best to read the book. Let me know if you have questions for specific words!
  • It says "Stop."
  • Dad, what does that sign say?

  • How NOT to teach children to read.
  • One way to help children learn to read is to read to them. This can acquaint kids with the conventions of written language registers. Reading to children can also help them recognize that written language makes sense, and that marks on a paper mean something.
  • How parents/adults can help children learn to read. Through the act of adults showing how the skill is performed, kids can learn to read.
