Ethiopia is an African country on the horn of Africa. It sits in between the tropical latitudes, and Ethiopia had two different encounters with Italy that were both very negative. Italy wanted to overthrow Ethiopia and attempted to, which is now known as the battle of Adwa. However, they were unsuccessful and Ethiopia was the only African country to fight for their independence and not get conquered.
The movement first started in Southern Africa around the 1880’s when mission farmers began building African churches.Their battle against Italy (The Battle of Adwa), first took place on March 1, 1896 in Northern Ethiopia.
The Ethiopians first fought Italy to protect their Independence since Italy wanted to conquer all of Ethiopia. Some of the most important figures during this movement were Menelik II, who was the first emperor of Ethiopia, and the Italian leader named Mussolini.
So Italy was defeated and Ethiopia won fair and square? keeping their independence?
