In 1325, a group of people called the Aztecs were sent by their god to find their permanent home.
Their god told them to find an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus. They actually found the eagle but it was on an island in the middle of the lake.
They created their homes on top of Lake Texcoco and named their city Tenochtitlan.
The Aztecs created chinampas to help expand their farming land and grow their crops.
The Aztec empire became very successful in all forms of agriculture. The empire was then defeated by the Spanish in 1519 to 1521.
Till this day, the eagle scene of the Aztecs is on the Mexican flag. The city of Tenochtitlan becomes known as Mexico City, one of the biggest cities in the world.
