- “Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was torndown then.”
- “It’s all right, officer,“I’m justwaiting for a friend. It’s an appointment made twenty yearsago. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn’t it? Well, I’llexplain if you’d like to make certain it’s all straight. Aboutthat long ago there used to be a restaurant where this storestands—‘Big Joe’ Brady’s restaurant.”
- “Twenty years ago tonight,“I dined hereat ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s with Jimmy Wells, my best chum andthe finest chap in the world. He and I were raised here inNew York, just like two brothers, together. I was eighteenand Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start forthe West to make my fortune. You couldn’t have draggedJimmy out of New York; he thought it was the only place on Earth.
- It sounds pretty interesting.
- Well, we agreed that night that we would meethere again exactly twenty years from that date and time, nomatter what our conditions might be or from what distancewe might have to come. We figured that in twenty yearseach of us ought to have our destiny worked out and ourfortunes made, whatever they were going to be.”
