Jonas is the receiver of memory. He has to have wisdom for the rest of the community by holding onto memories, good and bad.
Jonas´ rules when being the receiver of memory; 1.) Always report to the attendant after school 2.)Go immediately to your dwelling 3.)you can ask questions and be rude 4.) Can´t discuss your training with anyone 5.) No dream telling 6.) don´t apply for medication 7.) Can´t have the right to be released 8.) You may lie
It wouldn't be safe if people made their own decisions.
Jonas noticed that each spacious room was different than in his own family dwelling. THings were more fancy. The fabrics on chairs were thicker, the table legs were not straight but shaped and curved with small decorations at the foot. THe bed was draped and Jonas had never seen so many books in his life.
Jonas' first dream is about memory in the snow and the magical feeling of winter. His second memory is about being in the sunshine. HIs last memory on the first day was a sunburn. Pain.
The people that run the community believe it's safer to make the communities decisions. If they did make their own, they could choose the wrong one.
The capacity to see beyond is the ability to use any of the senses that were present in the memories, but not in the community. For Jonas, this ability reveals itself in his ability to see color.
