The Roanoke Colony
The purpose of the settlement of Roanoke was to mine for gold and silver, discover a passage to the Pacific Ocean, and Christianize he Indians.
The Colonization of Roanoke was a big expectation as it was the first English settlement in the "New World."
C R O A T O A N
The settlers arrived on a little Island in where is now a part of modern-day Virginia.
Although the new settlement was created, the people were unwilling to work and therefore didn't get much accomplished.
The colonists suddenly disappeared and the only piece of evidence left was the word Croatoan found carved on a post at the settler's fort on Roanoke Island.
Anything could have happened to the Roanoke Colony. The settlers could have gotten lost at sea, a monster may have taken them, the natives could have killed them, etc. The Roanoke Colony's sudden disappearance makes it one of the greatest mysteries in U.S. history.
