Arrival At Roanoke
We have finally made it to Roanoke!
Colony From August To October
After John White Leaves
Write Croatoan so John White knows we went there.
The colonists arrived in 1587 on Roanoke Island. John White was the leader of the expedition. Two years before the new colonists arrived, there was a different party that had sailed to the same place, but they got tired of waiting for their leader to come back so they left the island.
Life was hard living in Roanoke. They had to hunt and grow their own food, and if there were shortages, then some people would die. They also had to deal with the nearby indians, which could be good and bad. Some indians were nice and would trade, others would attack. The settlers also had to live in small shacks, even big families had to fit in them.
After John White left to get supplies, the colonists decided to go to the Croatoan Island. They wrote to words CRO and Croatoan on trees. When John White returned he had found those words and their deserted settlement. European items and skeletons were found on the Croatoan Island hundreds of years later, that proves the colonists would have been there.
