Don Trine goes on long walks by himself every day after working in the fieldsThe two boys see Don Trine going for a walk often after work one day. They go and ask if they can tag along.
Yeah. I agree, I see a coffee can over there though.
These holes are too perfect for an animal to have made.
The two boys start to think of the possible things that Don does on his long walks around the grove. The idea that really stuck with them was that he was hiding treasure because he used to have a lot of money.
Yeah. He's just diggin' holes out there.
The boys go back to the field to tell the people of their assumption. They then go out and follow Don Trine when he goes out on his walk the next day.
The ground is frozen and I can no longer dig holes.
The boys hide in a ditch to see what is in the field after Don leaves. They find coffee cans and perfectly round holes in the dirt.
The boys observe Don digging the holes with the coffee cans and then stick his arm in the dirt. He would then cover his arm with the dirt and "feel" the earth.
That's so weird!
The winter season comes and the ground becomes frozen and hard. Don Trine can no longer dig holes in the dirt and put his arm in them.
