  • You put food scraps and yard waste into your compost bin. These are organic materials.
  • What is in a compost bin?
  • The compost gets broken down by different animals like earthworms and fungi. They live in the bin.
  • What happens to all that stuff in the compost bin?
  • When you compost, microbes, snails, worms, and fungi break the food scraps down over a long period. It turns into soil that you can use in your garden.
  • What animal breaks down hard food scraps or wood?
  • Snails and slugs will eat the wood scraps. Well, fungi break down the hard food scraps. This can take months. 
  • So do the other animals break down the rest of the scraps?
  • Yes, they eat the rest of the waste. Earthworms also dig through the compost which adds air into the compost.
  • Over time, the scraps will become dirt. That is what you can remove to use.
  • How do you know when the compost is ready to be used as fertilizer?
