  • )nce i saw another man shot dead next to me, he was standing right beside me, and i couldn't move, couldn't make a sound, or I would be next.
  • Character vs. Nature
  • Josef and Ruthie's house was being raided by nazis. ""No! Josef screamed. "No!" The shadows threw him to the floor. Another one picked up Ruth by the hair and slapped her."
  • Character vs. Society
  • This is one of the many times that Josef's father was muttering about the concentration camp to himself. All Josef and his family could do was watch. For awhile Josef's fathers only enemy was himself.
  • This was after Mahmoud and his mother were seperated from Hana and his brother and father. "The cold water was like a slap in Mahmoud's face. Before he could think, he gasped, sucking in a mouthful of Mediterranean Sea."
  • This is during the riots when the Cubans were going against the cuban government. The Cuban government was fightinh back. This is right when the gov. was about to get her father. "The policeman raised his truncheon to hit her father again, when Isabel jumped in between them."
