Mahmoud is desperate to find refuge, so he asks a man who immigrated 67 years ago to go in his car back to his home. The man kindly agrees. Although Mahmoud is overjoyed, his father is still distraught.
The family receives another text saying that their boat is waiting for them. When the man driving the car offers to take them, Mahmoud's mother reverently thanks him. Mahmoud still feels elation, in spite of all of the times they have been let down.
YOUR BOAT IS HERE REPORT TO THE SHIPPING DOCK IMMEDIATELY
Mahmoud's family is shocked that the boat is actually there. By rushing onto the poorly constructed boat illegally, they have committed a transgression, or a violation of the law. The smugglers disembark the raft for their own safety, and nobody's voice was audble over the roar of the engine.
The boat speeds into a rock, and everyone is jolsted into the sea. When Mahmoud's family discovers that their life vests are "fake," they are bristled. Treading water is tiring, but they try not to remain stagnant. They are fearful that their lives will end, and are especially worrried abut Hana.
By a haphazard chance, another boat flows by, and Mahmoud snastches the side of it. Though he grabbs his mother and sister just in time, he is estranged from the rest of his family. The members of the surviving boat refuse to let them all invade their dinghy, but accepted Mahmoud's offer of caring for Hana. Though it brings hope to Hana's future, Mahmoud is left mournful.
Mahmoud recognizes the man who was sitting next to him on the dinghy and discovers that he is dead. Mahmoud is faced with a difficult decision, but he winds up seizing the man's life vest because it functions properly. This leaves the man to be deserted at the bottom of the ocean, but at least his mother can have a small respite. Mahmoud is distressed by the fact that this may be the end to his odyssey.
