"The Necklace'' is a short story that takes place in Paris around the 1800s where a young middle-class women dreams of endless wealthiness but cannot reach it. Her husband comes home with an invitation with a dance but Mathilde, the young women, does not want to go because she feels she will not look good enough.
Our main character Mathilde Loisel believes that she was born into the wrong social class and fantasizes of royalty. When her husband comes home with dance tickets she complains of not having a dress so he gives her money. She then complains of having no jewels so she borrows some from her friend Mme. Forestier.
Hello Mme. Forestier.
I am sorry. Who are you?
Mme. Loisel and her husband are having a great time at the dance as Mathilde dances with passion gaining the looks of many men. At the end of the night, Mathilde goes to take of the necklace but finds that it is lost. The family now has to pay for a new one.
I lost your necklace.
But I thought you gave it back?
Mathilde finally pays off all of her debts after 10 years.During these 10 years, "She came to know what heavy housework was...". Mathilde finally was putting in work not just complaining about the life she was living.
One day Mme. Loisel is on her way to the market when she runs into Mme. Forestier and Mme. Forestier can barely recognize Mathilde because she has done a lot of work. They continue to talk about the past and the necklace comes up.
As they continue to talk about the necklace, Mathilde admits that she lost it and worked to pay for a new one.Mme. Forestier can not believe it stating that her necklace was a a fake and nowhere worth the value of the replacement.
