  • The war of 1812 hurt Canadians and Native Americans, who see it as a decisive turning point in their losing struggle to govern themselves.

  • The official reason as made clear in the declaration of war by the United States of America to Great Britain was the Impression Issue that was made by the British Government under their Orders-in-Council.  This Impression Issue is an act whereby men are forced by the government for induction into military service.

  • Laura Secord ran 20 miles in the snowy woods to warn the British army of an American ambush.
  •  Extra info
  • 15,000 Americans died and 8,600 British died. 
  • What ended the war
  • A large British army under Sir George Prevost was thus forced to abandon its invasion of the U.S. northeast and retreat to Canada. The American victory on Lake Champlain led to the conclusion of U.S.-British peace negotiations in Belgium, and on December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed, ending the war. The war lasted 2 years; 1812-1814
