  • This is Alexander Hamilton, the Federalists supported his views
  • Hamilton believed in a strong central government led by prosperous, educated elite upper-class citizens.
  • Jefferson believed in a strong state and local government rooted in popular participation.
  • The power and size of the federal government in relation to the state and local government caused the first two party system to form.
  • A two party system is a political system dominated by two major parties
  • Most people in the north supported Hamilton.  Most people in the south and west supported Jefferson.
  • Jefferson wanted our new nation to be more like France. While Hamilton's vision of America was that of a country much like Great Britain with strong central government, commerce, and industry.
