  • Verbal Irony
  • Here's some medication
  • Cough! Cough!
  • Situational Irony
  • Dramatic Irony
  • Come with me I have some wine for you
  • "Enough," he said; "the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough." "True—true," I replied; "and, indeed, I had no intention of alarming you unnecessarily—but you should use all proper caution. A draught of this Medoc will defend us from the damps." This is an example of verbal irony because he is saying that his cough will not kill him, and Montresor says "true, true" because he knows he is going to kill him not the cough.
  • Foreshadowing #1
  • Wine
  • "With these materials and the aids of my trowel, I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche." This is a type of situational irony because we didn't expect Montresor to trap Fortunato with a wall, you would expect him to just kill Fortunato right then.
  • Foreshadowing #2
  • You're a mason?
  • Yes I am. *Shows trowel*
  • "I passed down a long winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed, we came at length to the foot of descent, and stood there together on a damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors." This is a type of dramatic irony because the reader knows that there is know wine in the basement, but Fortunato doesn't know.
  • Foreshadowing #3
  • "He has a weak point--this Fortunato--although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine."
  • When Fortunato doesn't believe that Montresor is a mason, Montresor pulls out a trowel and shows it to Fortunato. The event of Montresor showing the trowel to Fortunato foreshadows the event of Montresor using the trowel to bury Fortunato alive.
  •  "The clown wore motley. He had on tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. "Irony "The clown wore motley. He had on tight fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells."Imagery "Here I knocked off the neck of a bottle which I drew from a long row of its fellows that lay upon the mold. "This is an example of foreshadowing because Fortunato was wearing motley, a type of clown suit. It was a fools outfit, and Fortunato was a fool for going down into the catacombs which takes place later in the story.
