Douglass was a slave who worked very hard to please his master but one day, poor ole Frederick Douglass Felt as though his head was pounding outside of his skull so he went to take a break and hid from the scorching sun. However the evil Covey came out because he could sense that Douglass wasn't working. The evil man asked him what was wrong and he told him he wasn't feeling well, but Mr.Covey didn't like that answer. He started kicking Douglass and he was in so much pain, he didn't think anything would be more painful. When Covey went to go get his beating tools,Douglass decided he would run away. But it wasn't that easy, he had to hide in a cornfield because he wasn’t fast enough to get away in one sprint however he eventually he made it into the woods.
Douglass k eventually wandered far enough to stay with a man named Sandy Jenkins who was another slave. He told Sandy what happened to him and he took such pity on him that he gave him a sacred root which would protect him from being whipped. It looked very old and worn out so he wasn’t sure but he didn't want to hurt Sandy’s feeling and he also didn’t have anything to lose. Sandy told him that he had to go back and he did. When he got there, Covey pretended that nothing happened and seemed brighter that a sunny day. He told Douglass to go tend to the horses and he listened. When Douglass least expected it Covey started attacking him. They fought long and hard and eventually Covey had to call over help but Douglass managed to fight off both of them.
From that day on, he was never whipped again. He held his head high from then on and promised himself that he would never think of himself as a slave again. This whole situation is telling us that we must not give up even if others want us to fail.
