What exactly happened?
First off, 183 Japanese planes attacked the US naval base in Hawaii. (pearl harbor) their goal was to destroy the US pacific fleet.
they bombed planes and torpedoed warships. in the first 5 minutes, 4 ships were hit. the USS Arizona was hit and had gunpowder in it. it then exploded and killed 1,177 crew members an hour and a half later, a second wave of 170 Japanese planes attacked.
When The USS west Virginia was hit, Doris Dorie Miller (a navy man) was there to help save the captain and other sailors. He later won the navy cross award. Some other people were able to get their planes off the ground to help fight.
Many people were impacted by the attacks. In 1942 Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps because the US was scared they weren't loyal. But there were so many Japanese Americans in Hawaii that doing it would hurt their economy. The daily lives of everyone were controlled by the military.
