Thanks to the Virgina Company granting us a charter, we can now practice our religion freely. As Seperatists King Charles l would've persecuted us!
Although we have rocky soil we have Cape Cod and the Massachusetts Bay to use for fishing, and whaling!
Thank goodness that we have the surronding woods for timber!
Our leader John Winthrop has told us that we must be a City On a Hill. After going to church I will go to my house to pray. We call this way of life the New England Way.
The Pilgrims also known as Seperatists, boarded the Mayflower to escape religious persecution in September 1620 They were led by William Bradford.
Ummm... I don't think this is Virgnia.
The storm did blow us off course... No matter, this should be our home.
We shall call this land Plymouth Rock
The people of New England used their enviornment for their economuy. The PIlgrims and Puritans in Massachusetts used Cape Cod and Massachusetts Bay for whaling, and fishing, and they used the surronding woods for timber. Substinence farming was also done but was only to feed their families.
The settlements of Jamestown and Plymouth were very different from each other. The motive for people coming to Jamestown was for profit and expanding the British Empire, while the Pilgrims and the Puritans came for religious freedom. The economy for both settlements were also distinct. Since Plymouth had rocky soil, they couldn't grow cash crops. They instead turned to their enviornment, using Cape Cod and the Massachusetts Bay for fishing and whaling, and the surronding woods for timber. Jamestown however, had fertlile soil so they could grow the cash crop of tobbaco.
To escape the threats of King Charles l, the Puritans left England on a charter by the Massachusetts Bay Company in 1630. Since John Winthrop wanted his colony to be a City on a Hill, his followers lives revolved around praying, reading the Bible, and going to church. This was called the New England Way, since thier laws were based on God's commandments.
The Pilgrims left England originally for Virgina in 1620, but a storm hit, and set them off course. They landed much further north in Cape Cod Massachusetts, where they named the land Plymouth Rock.
"What is the difference between Jamestown and Plymouth?"
