The main character of the book, Raskonkniov, is a failed Russian student from a fairly wealthy family. His story in the book is one of poverty and desperation, too afraid to ask for help from his family and too stubborn to ask his friends he resorts to crime to solve his problems.

Sofya, one of the other main characters in the novel is Raskonkinov's closest friend or so she thinks- He was betrothed to her but now denies his agreement in an attempt to leave himself choice in life for someone he really loves, but she loves him and does everything in her power to help him, even though she lives in poverty herself.
"Raskonkniov stared at the package intently, reaching into his jacket as the woman inspected the parcel" (73)
The main theme of the novel is that every action in time is repayed. In the book it was Raskonkniov being arrested and sent to Siberia for his murders.

This quote foreshadows the murder of the elderly pawnbroker later in the book. It does nit directly disclose that she is murdered, but gives near sound proof that it is so.
This quote within the novel shows suspense even within the characters. It shows the reader if R. has the courage to actually go through with his plan despite all of his qualms.
Sick and tired, Raskonkinov pleads for Sofya to leave him so that he may sleep in peace. This shows he has a very depressed mood and incited pity for him.
