I shouldn't even be thinking about this... But who will pay for the heat?
Raskolnikov, a failed Russian Student in Imperial Russia lays sick with the flu on the floor of his ramshackle apartment. The only help he has being a maid of the Landlord. He is poor, hungry and desperate... Willing to do anything for food or money.
Late one night Raskolnikov groggily stumbles into the Aparment's main room which is currently serving food. In hushed tones from two men in the corner he overhears a joke about murdering a old woman who runs a pawn shop. They complain she and others like her eat well whilst the rest of Russia starves. He observes his situation and thinks about what he has become... Would he could become
He takes a long look at his situation, contemplating what he has become, a plotting murderer?! However he soon recognizes his hopeless situation. His family still thinks he is attending school even though he spent all of his tuition on drink long ago..He can't go back to them! He has no where to turn to... Perhaps no one will notice the death of one old hag?
After coming to terms with his situation, and seeing murder as his only chance at survival he decides to go through with it. After a moment of hesitation at the scene he brings an axe into the woman's skull and kills her. Noticing the woman's daughter and seeing the need for secrecy after she witnessed the murder kills her as well to protect his identity.
Months after the murder as Raskolninov sits comfortably in an Inn, he is arrested by the local (Portly) investigator who found out about his misdeed who promptly arrests him for murder after explaining to his sister his actions.
After he is arrested and given a swift trial, he is exiled to Siberia to work in a labor camp for the rest of his days.
