  • In this scene, Candy is protecting Lennie from getting caught by Curley's Wife because of what happened to Curley's hand. Steinbeck uses this to answer the essential question by showing us that Candy is trustworthy and Lennie can rely on Candy to protect him from losing his job. The author wants us to understand that friendship is about having trust in one another.
  • In this scene, Crooks is talking to Lennie about how good of a friend he has and that he's alone. Steinbeck uses this to answer the essential question by showing us that even though Lennie isn't the brightest, he is a good listener. The author wants us to understand that our duty to others is to be a good listener and to be able to comfort others just by listening.
  • In this scene, George is talking to Lennie about their future ranch and how he is going to be able to tend the rabbits. Steinbeck uses this to answer the essential question by showing us that George felt bad because Lennie wasn't very bright, and because of that,  no one would hire him. The author wants us to understand that when you feel empathy for someone,  try to comfort them.
