Brian Robeson (13 years old) flies on a plane to Canada to see his father after him and his mother divorced. It’s only the pilot and Brian. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and Brian is left alone. He gets very afraid and feels lonely. He then tries to radio other people after that. He has a hatchet. It is a gift from his mother.
Brian is alone and waits until the plane runs out of fuel to crash/land into a lake. He tries to radio other people while waiting for the plane to run out of fuel. It doesn’t work and he finds someone but loses signal. He plans to push the plane down once the plane runs out of fuel. It is very intense and scary. Then he throws up in fear.
He drops altitude finds a lake while he is falling. He crashes into the lake in a heart wrenching manner and it is terrifying. He is injured and very tired from the exhausting crash. He is so afraid, he doesn’t realize he is even screaming as the plane crashes. He lands/crashes and it’s all so surreal to him.
He wakes up from his nap after the crash. He feels pain all over. Thankfully, nothing is broken. There's a bump over his eyes on his forehead which really hurts. Then, when dawn arrives, mosquitoes absolutely cover him. They enter his nose, his mouth, on his body, literally everywhere on his body. When he tries to inhale, they are in his nose. Only when the sun is directly hitting him they are gone.
In the start of the chapter, he goes to the lake to drink water. It quenches his thirst but he throws up most of the water he drank. He thinks about things in this chapter. He thinks about his hunger. He thinks about a teacher he had. The teacher is named Perpitch and he gives motivation to his students. The teacher said that the best asset you have is yourself. He then thinks about the search teams that might try and find him. He then remembers that when the pilot had a heart attack the plane has a jerk to the right. He could be miles off course.
