Finally and surprisingly, Dally shows up out of nowhere and goes to get food. On the way back to the church, Johnny confesses how he wants to go back and turn himself into the police.
As Pony, Dally, and Johnny reach the bottom of the mountain, they noticed something. At the top, the old wooden church was ablaze. Pony quickly realizes that this may have been their fault. They all rush to the top of the mountain to figure out what had happened.
Johnny and Pony quickly find out that there are many kids that are missing and they need to go save them. Even though Dally doesn't approve the idea, the boys gallantly climbed in through the window.
I'm so happy that we are back together.
Once Johnny and Pony get into the burning church, they find the kids in the back. They start throwing them out the window gently, to save them from the flames roaring above them.
Even though Pony and Johnny got the kids out safe, they didn't think about themselves. Pony climbed out quickly, before the church crumbled. However, Johnny did not. Johnny was struck by the falling timbers that came down like rain. As Dally was trying to save Pony from being burned, and Johnny from being trapped, he hurt himself.
Pony immediately wanted to know how Johnny and Dally were. It was unfathomable to Ponyboy that Johnny may not live after the damage that that had been done. Before Pony knew it, however, his two brothers walked in, and they all reunited. Pony realized that Darry really loved him.
