Montag and Mildred hear scratching outside their door.
Montag wants help to better understand the books he has. He then recalls a time where he met an old English professor at a park. His name was Faber and he gave him a slip of paper with his address on it.
Montag heads over to Faber's house on a subway and feels somewhat numb. On the way there he gets distracted by a toothpaste commercial and forgets what he has read in the Bible.

Montag reaches Faber's house and wants to better understand the Bible. Montag says he wants to steal books and make more copies of them. Faber tells Montag why their society bands books.

Faber gives Montag these hidden seashells called green bullets that he can communicate with him on the other side.
Montag walks back home and hears there is a war going on through the radio of a car. But Faber tells Montag that the news is a lie and that instead of a million troops being mobilized there is 10 million.
"We have mobilized a million men. Quick victory is ours if the war comes .. .."
