Soviets on their way to space in Sputnik ending the arms space race. The United States grew fearful and scared of the Soviet power.
President Eisenhower's attempt to make amends with the Soviet Union.
Khrushchev, I would like to discuss the relationship between the U.S. and your Soviet Union. We will meet on September 15, 1959 in the U.S. to discuss relations further. --President Eisenhower
Even though the Soviets can get into space, do you suppose they have the ability to shoot U-2 down?
Mr. President by our calculations the possibility of U-2 getting shot down are very slim.
Mr, President I highly doubt the Soviets would shoot it down. I presume they do not have the firing capability to hit the plane.
On the 1st of May, 1960 U-2 was shot down. The United States spy plane has been keeping tabs on the Soviets for a long time. The Soviets took U.S. pilot Gary Powers as prisoner.
You fool! Spying on my country with an embarrassing plane, shows such weakness within you. You caused great shame to your country as well as the world. And to think, I wanted to become allies with you. I'm Leaving!
Khrushchev let's make this as simple as possible; you give me Powers, and I'll give you your spy.
Fine, but I don't want to see you or your army ever again.
