The northern states of America didn't want slavery but the south strongly disagreed. South states didn't want California to enter the union as a free state because it would mess with the balance between free and slave states. To decide whether or not California would become a state they came up with a compromise, it stated that California could become a state and the slave trade would end but slavery would not.

African Americans are not citizens of the U.S.
The fugitive slave act made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas. It was created to help slaveholder get their runaway slaves back. Uncle Tom's Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe was an anti-slavery novel. It went against the fugitive slave act.
John Brown's Raid on Harperś Ferry
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a plan that would divide the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase into two territories-Kansas and Nebraska- and allow the people in each to decide on the question of slavery. Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent civil confrontations in the United States between 1854 and 1861 which was the result of the political debate over slavery being legal in the state of Kansas
Lincoln is Elected President
Aberham Lincoln is now president.
The court ruled that he was not a citizen because the nation's founders believed that African Americans, free or enslaved, didn't have any rights. This was important because it led to the Missouri Compromise restriction on slavery which made many northerners mad.
This began when he and his army of about 20 men took over the arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in hopes of starting a slave rebellion. They planned to kill or take hostage any white southerners that got in their way. He sent many men to get slaves to join him but they didn't come in fear of punishment that might come after. He and the men that stayed retreated.
One thing about Abraham Lincoln is that he was actually not an abolitionist. His main purpose was not to get rid of slavery but to preserve the union. He was also largely self-educated. He served 4 terms in the Illinois legislature. He was a "president of firsts". The south didn't like Lincoln getting elected but the north did.
