Ruthie and her family had just arrived in New York a few months ago. They are refugees from Cuba.
The year is 1962
Ruthie is in the 5th grade. She is in a classroom with other refugees that do not know a lot of English. She has a friend named Ramu. He is from India. They both are mastering their English.
Her dad was the only one who was working. He paid the bills and took care of the entire family. Ruthie's family was not the poorest, but not the richest. After hard work, the dad decided to buy his dream car. It was a blue 1955 Oldsmobile.
Off to work!
Mom please I need help!
Ruthie's dad had bought a nice 1950's car. On their way home they got into a car crash. Ruthie was the main one who was hurt. She had to be in a body cast for over a year! Ruthie was now a broken girl who cannot move without the help of her parents.
Ruthie's family drove in their new car to see their friends. They were in a car crash on the way home. Five people were killed and a few were just injured. Ruthie was the main one who was critically injured. She had to be in a body cast for over a year! Ruthie was now a broken girl who could not move without the help of her parents.
Ruthie had to learn to be hopeful and to be thankful. She wasn't happy that she was in a cast at first, but she could have died. A teacher was sent to Ruthie's apartment to teach her the things she could not learn because she could not attend school. Through 5th and some of 6th grade she learned more than the students could handle. Ruthie had also learned that family is the most important thing in life.
Ruthie still has a limp, but all in all life turned out great. She was very thankful that she had lived. They do miss Cuba, however Cuba was always in their hearts. Izzie, her 5 year old brother, was very proud of her.
