Higlac, king of the Swedes, heard of the troubles in Heorot. Higlac's best warrior, Beowulf, also heard this and proclaimed that he would sail to Denmark and defeat the monster Grendel.
Upon arriving in Denmark, Beowulf came across a coast guard who demanded to know their business. Beowulf proclaimed that he was seeking Hrothgar and would defeat Grendel. The guard brought him to Heorot.
Beowulf told king Hrothgar that he was a most accomplished warrior and had won many battles. He said that he could kill Grendel with his bare hands and that if he were to die, to take care of his men and send his possessions back to Higlac.
