  • This is my blood glucose meter! It helps me keep track of my glucose because of my diabetes.
  • What's that Alan?
  • Oop I have less sugar!
  • Why are you eating so many yogurt raisins? I thought people with diabetes shouldn't eat sugar?
  • There are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1, where the body doesn't make enough sugar, and type 2, where the cells dont absorb sugar.
  • So, why are you eating raisins? I read somewhere that too much sugar is bad for diabetic people.
  • Well, I have type 1 diabetes, and the sugar you are talking about is high fructose corn syrup, which is bad for you, but regular fructose is good for you. Raisins have regular fructose, which my body needs.
  • Wait, type 1 diabetes needs sugar right?
  • So there are 2 types of diabetes, one of them that makes less sugar and the other one doesn't absorb it into cells. There is also 2 kinds of sugar, high fructose corn syrup which is bad for you, and regular fructose that is healthy and people like you with type 1 need. You are supposed to control it with help from the blood glucose meter!
  • Yes. High fructose corn syrup is the kind of sugar that's in cakes and cookies, it's the bad sugar, and fructose is in these raisins.
