The year is 2081. The son of George and Hazel Bergeron, Harrison, has been taken by the government. Everyone, if not already average, is given handicaps to make them all equal.
Hazel and George discuss their day and then begin watching a show with ballerinas. Suddenly a broadcast comes on saying that Harrison, their son, has escaped prison. Harrison then takes over the news channel and declares himself free.
Harrison declares himself the emperor of his newly founded Empire and recruits people to join him. Harrison and his empress are shot dead before they hit the floor, all by the Handicapper General.
Literary Device - Symbolism
Diana Moon Glampers tells everyone who is left alive to put their handicaps back on and return everything back to normal.
Even though Hazel witnesses and cries over her son being dead right in front of her, she eventually forgets unable to tell George while he is in the kitchen.
Symbol - Diana Moon Glampers represents what the law is like and what is considered "average".
