The Necklace is set in Paris France in the late 19 century. Madame Mathilde is a middle class woman who wished she was wealthier. Her husband gets a invitation to go to a big party. Mathilde declines because she has no dress.
She buys a dress for 500 francs. Then she borrows a diamond necklace from her friend Madame Forestier.
MATHILDE THATS YOU?!
At the party she was a big hit. After the party she finds out that she lost the necklace. In panic they try to pay off the 36,000 necklace in anyway possible. They get a lot of loans from sharks.
It was fake you know... right?
For 10 years the Loisels work to pay off the debt. They sold there home and live in someone's attic. The labor made Mathilde age and look completely different. But in the end they were able to pay off the debt.
After its all done. Mathilde sees Madame Forestier on the street. At first she doesnt recognize her. Matilde then tells her about how she had worked for the last 10 years paying off the cost of the new necklace.
Madame Forestier then tells her that the necklace was paste and only worth about 500 francs. It was ironic because the original necklace was fake. Then Mathilde worked for 10 years to pay for a new real one for her.
