Confederate's were the first to fire at Fort Sumter. No casualties were reported from this war. This marked the start of a war between 27 Northern states and 11 Southern States.
Battle of Wilderness May 5- 7 18
The Confederates wanted control of the Mississippi River. In 1863 General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union forces collided. The Battle lasted 48 days. On July 4 the confederates surrendered to lack of food.
Battle of Mobile Bay August 2- 23 1864
General Braxton Bragg wanted to reoccupy Chattanooga. The Union army retreated to Chattanooga but the Confederates were surrounding it so they captured the Union. Over 34,000 casualties were reported.
Battle of Petersburg June 15, 1864- April 2,1865
This war was fought in the swampy woods. There was no clear victor. The Union marched toward Spotsylvania.
The General of this battle was David Farragut. He had 18 vessels. The goal was to shut down the remaining ports that were the confederates active ports. One of their ships was sunk by a torpedo.
Petersburg was a crucial spot and it had five major railroads. This big battle had little battles inside of it including Deep Bottom, Peebles farm, and Boydton Plank Road. After thousands of lives were lost Robert E. Lee issued a evacuation order of Petersburg and Richmond.
