The Wishtree's name is Red, and he is an oak tree near the Elementary School. Red is a talking tree, and just try to get a tree to tell a good joke. "Trees do talk to some folks, the ones we know we can trust. We talk to daredevil squirrels. We talk to hardworking worms. We talk to flashy butterflies and bashful moths".
Red is called Wishtree because people write their wish on a rag and they tie to the tree. ''Every year on the first day of May, people come form all over town to adorn me with scarps of paper, tags, bits of fabric, snippets of yarn, and the occasional gym sock. Each offering represents a dream, a desire, a longing''.
All of Red's or Wishtree's friend's are Bongo, Hairyspider, The Owl, the two cats, Rose Petal, The Opossums, The Raccoons, and Samar and Stephen. ''Bongo says I'm a busybody, and I suppose she has a point. She;s my best pal, a crow I've known since she was nothing but a pecking beak in a speckled egg''.
Stephen and Samar were neighbors and they are really good friends. They went to the same school. Samar just recently moved in the neighborhood. Samar wishes was for a friend, and Red being the optimist she is, and she wants to do everything to grant the wishes. Samar always visited the tree, and they were also very good friends.
One afternoon a boy who looked like he was in high school carved the word leave'' on Red. People didn't know if it was a wish or a threat. But the police never found who it was. A couple weeks later Red saw him sauntering. In the end, Samar's wish was granted, she found friend's and Red continuing to be a optimist and a story teller.
