Once upon a time, there was a mythical creature called the Minotaur, who lived in a maze under the island of Crete.
There was an agreement between the Athenians and the Cretens, for the Athenians to send 9 young men and women to Crete every 9 years to feed the Minotaur.
A young Athenian prince called Thessus, decided to put an end to this agreement by slaying the Minotaur. To do this he posed as a young man and joined the young men and women to Crete. The Cretan Princess Adriadne fell in love with Prince Thessus and gave him a sword and a ball of thread to defeate the Minotaur.
Prince Thessus overpowered and killed the Minotaur, he then used the string to find his way out of the maze.
On his way home he abandoned the princess on a island
Thessus had promised his father, on his return to sail with white sails, however he had forgot to change the sails, so when his father saw the black sails he believed that his son had been killed and threw himself off the cliff.
