Due to the fact that the prisoners were in an emaciated state of physical being, they moved their limbs, and did anything they could to retain some color before the selection ceremony. "Before you go into the next room, try to move your limbs, give yourself some color".
In the quotation, "the old men stayed in their corner, silent, motionless, hunted down creatures. The words motionless and hunted down stick out and have strong connotation. I feel these words convey the petrified tone of Wiesel's narrative because, it shows how the jews felt, scared and weak.
Wisel uses short, incomplete sentences in the second to last paragraph because, he wants to be more brief with the audience of how anxious he felt to see if his father was chosen or not. This approach gives the reader a view of how fearful he was.
