Mary Jackson is a tall black woman. She has a bob length haircut and holds her head high with confidence. Mary has a taste for fashion and wears a range of colourful dresses, skirts, pants and tops. She has a strong passion for engineering and is resilient, as she will do whatever it takes to get what she wants.
Mary is married to Levi Jackson, and together they have two children. Levi is supportive of her aspiring career, but sometimes struggles with her work and family balance. An important quote by Mary Jackson is, “Every time we have a chance to move ahead, they move the finish line.” She says this when talking to Vivian Mitchell about becoming an engineer for NACA. Mary thinks that it is unfair, as she is qualified, but has now been told she needs to do more to get the position.
An important scene is Mary’s first day at an all white male school. A range of shots are used, including a mid shot to show the reaction of the students in the room. In the shot we see Mary seated at her desk and a few other men at desks around her. Their faces show that they are surprised to see a woman of colour in the same class as them, and that they probably think she doesn’t deserve to be there.
