  • Texans rebel.
  • Battle at the Alamo
  • By 1830, there were 6 times as many Americans in Texas than Mexicans. The Texans wanted to be able to write official documents in English, as they were to stubborn to learn Spanish. And they were pissed because Mexico outlawed slavery in 1829. The Mexicans were unhappy that the Americans  were coming without permission. Also, most of the Americans had no plans of becoming Mexican citizens. The government closed off Mexico to further immigration.
  • Ambush in the making
  • Guess their not coming. Wake me up if they do.
  • Several  Americans called for a revolution to overthrow the Mexicans in Texas. A lawyer decided to use negotiation to try to get the Americans what they wanted while still letting Mexico have Texas.  He was jailed for promoting rebellion. The Texans responded with rebellion.
  • Texans win independence
  • Remember the Alamo
  • The Texans took an old mission to use as their base. Santa Anna, the leader of the Mexican government, attacked the Americans base. For twelve days, the Mexican army pounded the base with cannon fire. Then, they charged in and fought for 90 minutes before every defender was dead.
  • Annexing Texas
  • We would be at war with Mexico!
  • The Texans leader, Sam Houston, retreated eastward. His plan was to make it harder for Santa Anna to supply his army and keep them ready for battle. When Santa Anna caught up, the Texans didn't attack, so many of the tired Mexicans decided to sleep.
  • As several Mexicans slept, the Texan army attacked, and quickly overrun the Mexicans. They held Santa Anna hostage, and he traded his freedom for their independence.
  • In America, the government was arguing over annexing Texas or letting it stay independent. When James K. Polk was elected president, Texas was annexed and became a state in 1845.
  • We need to annex Texas to complete manifest destiny.
