Storyboard Text

  • Hi I'm Dave the Dragon.  I will be teaching you Earth's layers and Tectonics.
  • The first thing  you need to know about is Density. Density is mass per volume unit.
  • Temperature differences cause density differences in liquid rock to rise and fall in the mantle's Asthenosphere during Convection Currents.
  • Right above the Lithosphere, which is the very top of the Mantle, are Tectonic Plates.
  • There are Continental Plates, which are made of granite and less dense than Oceanic Plates, that are made of basalt.
  • Alfred Wegener hypothesized that continents have drifted apart. This is called Continental Drift.
  • The Theory of Plate Tectonics is evidence based on the movement of Earth's crust.
  • My evidence is that there have been fossils of the same species found on continents that are separated by miles of ocean.
  • Sea floor spreading is when 2 oceanic plates diverge, create a rift where new sea floor fills in.
  • A subduction zone is where an oceanic plate goes below a continental plate and creates a trench.
  • Magnetic striping is the reversal of the magnetic poles as retained in the sea floor.
  • Plate boundaries are where to crustal plates meet.
  • Convergent boundaries are when to plates collide.
  • Divergent boundaries are when to plates move away from each other.
  • That is all the vocab terms you will need to know about Plate Tectonics. Done by Brogan Funni
