  • The longhorn was one of the most useful animals in the 1800’s because it had so many uses. With its huge horns it could protect itself from common animal threats that regular cattle could not defend by themselves.Most Texas settlers made horns of the longhorn into cups,decorations,furniture,and utensils some even stored gunpowder in hollowed out horns.The only thing longhorns could not supply was food most settlers called it “8 pounds of hamburger on 800 pounds of bone.
  • The major strike at Spindletop or as most people called it “Big hill” but it was only 10-20 feet tall.Pattillo Higgins was a brick-factory owner who made the conclusion that oil was under Big hill.He tried to get out all the oil himself but his equipment was far to weak so people invested.He got the equipment he needed and drilled out 800,000 barrels of oil that went up 150 feet in the air.
  • New machines,new farms,and the introduction of railroads would lead to a boom in farming. Most farmers would plant cotton because it was the best cash crop and it grew the best the dry climate of Texas.Because the new railroads it was easy to ship cotton all over The state,but it was even easier to ship cotton out of state
