ironically, they started enforcing strict religion on other church members and started the Salem witch trials and called themselves the "city on the hill"

the ground was rocky, and not good for farming, so they really didn't have anyone to trade with other than the natives because the landed in cape cod in Massachusetts during a storm so the natives had to teach them how to grow food, and to show peace, started the first thanksgiving.
cape cod was rocky and by a forest with rocky soil so while they only had small farms, they had plenty of timber.
