Conflict and exposition in the story would be against David and his mother. Mrs. Pelzer is an alcoholic and is constantly abusing David even when she's relatively sober. Not only does this create conflict between David and his mother but his father.
The rising action in the story is when David runs away from home the second his mother give him the open chance to leave and never come back. Being a young kid on the streets for less than a day lands him in a fast food restaurant. The owner working allows David some food to keep him around while he calls the police.
The rising action 2 in the story would be when the police arrive to escort David to the station, once they arrive, they ask David some questions. Being as petrified as he was, David did not tell the police the truth about his mother and being constantly abused so with the following report of running away and his father retrieving him to home this results in punishment from his mother
