I am true to my own race. I wish to see all done that can be done for their encouragement, to assist them in acquiring property, in becoming intelligent, enlightened, useful, valuable citizens.
Hiram R. Revels was born on September 27, 1827. As a kid, Hiram had been home schooled by a black woman. As he grew up he had moved with his brother to lincolnton, North Carolina, where he had apprenticed as a barber. He had ended up going to knox college where he had studied religion. He had become a pastor until 1869, when he had been elected to the Mississippi state senate. Hiram R. Revels died on January 16, 1901.
Hiram had many achievements in his life. For one he was the first African-American person to be elected to the Untied States Senate. He had started off as a pastor but he had always dreamed of becoming something in politics. He had fought in the for the Union as well. He had done many things in life, and there is no doubt that anyone will forget him.
Even though you may not know his name that well, he has done great things for this country. As I have said before, Hiram was the first African-American person to be apart of the United states senate. One thing that you may not know about him is that when the Civil War broke out, he recruited two black regiments from Maryland. He had also served in the war once black men were able to fight for the country.
